LIVING ON THE EDGE
This year our harvest celebrations were based around the sights, sounds and
flavours of Africa. We had a weekend of activities and used the Tear Fund material
as a basis for our Sunday worship.
We had a great time as we washed 25+ cars on the Saturday morning. Fortunately,
the sun shone. There was a team of about 15 people, armed with buckets, sponges,
soapy water and leather chamis. The downside was that the rain came in the
afternoon - sorry to all those whose car had a second wash!

In the afternoon we had a variety of activities at the Family Fun event, with
face painting, games, making a 3D cardboard map of Africa, listening to African
music and a quiz based around African fruit and vegetables that were bought from
an international shop in Brighton. The highlight of the afternoon was a performance
by 3 drummers, playing on different types of African drums and the dancing of three
members of Wukulu. Everyone watched and enjoyed their enthusiasm and energy as
they treated us to some real African culture and customs. They then invited the
audience to participate and many people were soon jigging around to the beat of
the African drums. Then people were given the opportunity to try their hands
out on the drums. The building reverberated to a great beat. |

On the Sunday morning, as we sat around the lunch tables in the Church Hall,
we learned about the Tuareg people in Niger. These people are nomads and are
constantly on the move as they search for food and water for their families
and animals. TEAR Fund, an international Christian charity, is helping these
people to dig for wells so that they can stay put rather than moving around
all the time.

We tried some African recipes at lunch, including coconut soup, vegetable
stew, chicken curry, fruit drinks, among other goodies.
Arising from the week-end, one of the Church members started a collection of
pennies - a 'Drop in a bucket'. People are asked to put their pennies in a bucket
so that we can send the money to TEAR Fund to be used in Niger towards another
well. From the week-end we raised over £200 and the bucket already has £60+ in it.
Although the week-end is over, we cannot forget the people of Niger and we hope
that our small contribution will make a huge difference to them.
